At Rachel Easley Photography its no surprise that we loveeeeee first birthdays! and even more when its our most popular backdrop – The Swan Princess! This is one theme that has been going strong All of 2019 and no signs of slowing down any time soon, Each session I try to tweak it a little to keep it looking fresh for you – See the Swan I made in the background? ( White mount board cut into a swan shape and a white feather boa! ) I especially love this backdrop as it so soft and muted and really allows your little one to shine! just a small hint of warmth against a pop of white and some twinkle lights just make it so magical!

Love this set-up as much as we do? If you want to recreate this swan princess for your little one’s cake smash, you can contact me to begin planning your session today!

I was a tad excited when mum mentioned a Jungle animal cake smash for her little ones cake smash – we pulled together a few images from pinterest and created a style board for the session – This is the best way to begin to see what you like and what you dont like. I always reccomend clients to look on my page and then head to pinterest for some inspiration, although I always mention that I wont copy another photographers work 100% we can still take inspiration and put our own twist on it. During the session mum mentioned he was having his party the next day at a local park so you can guess my surprise when scrolling through my instagram to find his party pics posted on one of my favourite party stylists instagram pages – head on over and take a peak at

Anyone else suffer from Hobby Lobby and Michaels envy when it comes to prop shopping for cake smashes??? I obviously dont have a Hobby Lobby or Michaels or Joannes close by here all the way in Brisbane Australia. Im not sure all the American photographers are aware how darn LUCKY they areally are haha, anyway I developed some serious prop envy for these ever so popular right now planter boxes. I HAD to have them so here is my DIY version for y’all NOT in America! As I am writing right now RIOT art and Craft stores in Australia have 50% off storewide and I found these cute little wooden boxes for $5.49 ( $10.99 )

What You Need:

  • Wooden Craft boxes
  • foam sheets ( I got a pack of 6 ) try and get white if you can mine was coloured
  • PVA craft glue
  • craft cutter
  • White MATT spray paint – I used 3 Cans
  • Ruler
  • Cutting mat
  • pen
Step 1 – Trace around your box shape onto the foam sheet and cut the excess away
Step 2 – measure in 1 inch from the sides to create a border
Step 3 – create 1 inch triangles in each corner
Step 4- create a X in the box and then cut out the 4 triangles
This is what your template will look like
Step 5 – glue all around the areas and attach to the outside of the box
Step 6 – Allow paint to fully dry and then you are ready to spray paint
I used a Matt white spray paint – I also tried a Primer and spray paint 2in1 but the results were runny and didnt take to the foam sheet – so have a test before you spray!
I am pretty happy with the final results – I still need to do another coat but I was eager to share! This was so quick and easy and I mean ANYONE can do this!

I hope this tutorial has helped someone who doesnt have access to purchase these and in the mean time I will continue to pray that a Hobby Lobby comes to Australia! cmon we have now have a Costco we NEED a Hobby Lobby too!

On Thursday I had the privilege of attending the Gold Coast MIBA – Mums in Business Association event about becoming a more ‘eco friendly brand’. The Guest speaker and discussion was led by my best friend Amie from Growing Kind – Head on over and check out her amazing eco friendly toy store! – she is local too in Waterford!

The key message was that:

Imperfect action is better than no action.

Make just one small change at a time.

Here are just a few ways we have become a more eco brand

Did you know we dont use Helium balloons – I have heard there is a shortage and it is best to leave it the medical industry who needs it more. What do we use then? I use a balloon pump to blow them up and I dont tie them up, I use a balloon clip to secure the air. Balloons are then hung from above using fishing line giving the illusion they are floating. 90% of our balloons are reused to eliminate unnessary waste.

Photographers are pretty good at selling and buying each others props – this helps us to have new things to offer clients without having to purchase brand new, we also happily share/hire props if we just need it for one session. You may have also seen the rise in digital backdrops – Did you know we can cleverly photoshop your gorgeous baby into a prop in photoshop? This is such a clever idea and one that Im sure has saved the over consumption of baskets/ props for each photographer. 1 Digital backdrop can be used by 1000’s of photographers around the world with the production of just 1 wooden bowl!

I also source alot of my props from FB marketplace, Gumtree or the Markets etc. Reduce Reuse Recycle Repurpose!

I am just in the process of looking for a plastic reusable cake board – 1 plastic board vs 100 cake cardboards in landfill. My cake maker is in the next suburb so by purchasing local it reduces our carbon footprint. Try to shop and do your best to purchase from local stay at home businesses, #supportlocal #supportsmall

I also have some of THE best clients who gift me items they no longer have a use for after they have outgrown outfits or left over party props but know I could use them here in the studio.

The biggest tip I came away from the meet up was one I had never even considered – Did you know your emails and stored files actaully have a carbon footprint? I never knew – Try to delete all uncessary emails and files.

What an amazing day! A room filled with such beautiful women all getting out of their comfort zones to meet new people, better their businesses and better themselves! If you are interested in coming along – here is the link to the facebook page – Hope to see you there!

Im always asked how I juggle it all? Honestly I question it myself some times haha. I have 4 boys but I also have a amazing husband who does ALOT around the house and in general taking care of the boys whilst Im here living my dream. Capturing 3-5 Birthdays a week, editing, marketing as well as actively on instagram and facebook, it can seem like a cruisy job but it is a full time one non the less. I spend more time running the business than shooting so what I love about inviting you into my space is I actually get to be in the moment with you, slowing down and watch it all unfold before my camera. This is my calm, my moment to pause, my moments of pure joy and gratitude. The craziness and busyness of everything just fades away for the moment. My creativity is my renewal. My studio is my sanctuary.

An all white session is just magical, a lot of my sets are filled with props so to strip it all bare is a lovely reminder to marvel at the magic that just is – A little blonde haired boy celebrating his first trip around the sun with a beautiful cake!

I didnt choose the cake life, The cake life chose me!

I just had to do a little blog post on this adorable session I did last weeks Lillte Baby B was the cutest little thing and his mumma requested a camping setup, I added a little splash of colour to make this set pop!

I was able to come up with something unique and different but still fit the brief that mum requested. She was thrilled when they came in the studio to see the setup. – This is the most daunting part of the cake smash session, The set reveal! Most parents give me full creative control, they send me a few images they like and say do your thing, we love it all! Ahh talk about pressure! haha I love doing a little tweak in every session to make it slightly different and I love a good DIY in every session. I love making things for the sets as its one of a kind – Im more of a glue gun in hand kind of crafter and love to go crazy with that thing!

We always start the session off with one clean outfit the family brings in or I have lots to choose from the studio wardrobe as well. Little Baby B looked adorable in this outfit from August Bear that is available from the studio wardobe.

Its that time of year again! We have built a whole new set for you this year. Its bigger than previous years so we can accomodate our growing families.

These sessions are a great way to add a touch of magic to your families Christmas – My families love this new tradition they have created for their little ones! This year I have put aside 3 days so hopefully I can accomodate all your preferred dates.

Little miss A was beyond adorable in her cute little romper and aint those curls just everything!!!!!!! The best part of watching your little ones cake smash is that we never know what we are going to get! This was some serious cake eating concentration this morning. The swan backdrop is still popular as ever, Im not sure how long its got left in the popularity test but Its one of my favourites so Im always happy to keep shooting it!
